In Italy most of the historical centers of great urban value are in highly seismic areas, as has been shown by the events of severe earthquakes in the area of Foligno - Assisi and Aquila. The need for protection and management of urban heritage that is able to enhance not only the historical, monumental, architectural and cultural value, but also to increase the capacity of resistance and "response" of these urban structures to earthquake becomes a priority for the urban and architectural intervention policies. The proposed contribution aims to show the problems related to this field of research and planning, starting from the brief presentation of the serious events in the historical center of Foligno – Assisi (1997) and Aquila (2009). Moving from these analyzes, tha Authors intend to show the research perspectives that are mainly based on an optimal integration of different planning tools, and innovative policies "targeted" to requalification and complete recovery of historical centres.
