"Appraisal Theory", developed within Systemic Functional Linguistics, provides a valuable theoretic framework for the identification and analysis of evaluative language. The focus of the paper is on dichotomies such as good/bad, agreement/disagreement, averral/attribution (Attitude in Appraisal Theory); modality and textual voice positions (Engagement); intensification and vague language (Graduation). The material analyzed consists of articles published in daily newspapers and weekly magazines of different political orientation to investigate how linguistic resources are used to create the desired stylistic, rhetorical and ideological effects.
