The paper is an attempt to analyze urban and symbolic metamorphoses produced during communism as well as to grasp their condition at the moment of their passing, after the fall of the regime and during the capitalist society. It interrogates two dialectical conditions of the city of Bucharest by interpreting them in terms of Benjaminian notions of phantasmagoria and allegory. Urban elements as both dreamworld and ruin will be critically introspected and will constitute premise for the understanding of the present urban and cultural topography.
