The project of the Italian Archaeological Expedition in the Erbil Plain (MAIPE), Iraqi Kurdistan, focused since 2013 on the two sites of Helawa/Aliawa, located c. 28 km south-west of Erbil. The article presents the first results of the intensive survey carried out at Helawa during three weeks in November 2013, in order to establish the main period of occupation at the site through a systematic collection of surface material and the study of pottery and other diagnostic finds. Moreover, a complete topographic plan with differential GPS for DEM and GIS elaboration was produced.
