On the basis of fresh results coming from the excavations 2013‐2014 at the Bronze Age settlement of Coppa Nevigata (Manfredonia, Apulia), the two authors discuss the evidence related to open spaces and pathways inside the settlement. Of great interest, in fact, is the occurrence of a large open space, which was floored several times over the 14th and 13th centuries BC. Afterwards, the same space was filled by repeated garbage disposals that resulted in extended midden deposits strongly characterised by organic remains. Possible patterns of use of this open space and possible reasons behind its functional shift at the end of the 13th century BC are discussed and correlated with evidence of socio‐economic transfor‐ mations of the resident community during the second half of the second millennium BC. Furthermore, this large open space is compared and contrasted with evidence of both predating and coeval open spaces at the settlement. Finally, traces related to both small roads leading into the settlement, testified starting from the 17th cen‐ tury BC, and set of pathways inside the settlement, occurring from the 13th century BC onwards, are analysed. Traces of similar infrastructures in coeval Bronze Age settlements in South‐eastern Italy are scanty as yet. Nonetheless, their occurrence in Coppa Nevigata testify that these communities were quite capable of planning the settlement fabric even in the absence of a steady centralised power, at least before the 12th century BC.
