This survey on the history of the Requiem arises from two key facts: - The marginal role that the production of requiems occupies in the studies of mentality historians regarding the relation between man and death; - The abundancy of requiem-based literature, mostly founded, however, on the study of single works or on the evasive variations of the word “requiem” (V. Jankelevitch) in the twentieth century. The realization of an actual Requiem catalogue - the ones composed between the end of the fifteenth century (the years of Ockeghem’s Requiem, first example of polyphonic setting of the mass for the dead) and 2007 - enables the possibility to classify and describe an extremely elusive subject. Looking at it from the right distance, problematic issues and questions appear to us quite clearly. Starting from this information, the catalogue connects a series of investigations (historical, statistical, anthropological) and comparisons between the arts, focusing on a few aspects of the history of the Requiem, moving within precise boundaries: - Confessional (the liturgical history of the ritual ceremony for the dead in the Roman Church tradition); - Temporal (the survey fails to go further than the beginning of the twentieth century, when being is catapulted into nothingness, into a haze where death is excluded).

Abstract
Starting from this information, the catalogue connects a series of investigations (historical, statistical, anthropological) and comparisons between the arts, focusing on a few aspects of the history of the Requiem, moving within precise boundaries: - Confessional (the liturgical history of the ritual ceremony for the dead in the Roman Church tradition); - Temporal (the survey fails to go further than the beginning of the twentieth century, when being is catapulted into nothingness, into a haze where death is excluded).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
