This essay discusses the relationship between vocal categories and individual singers in Verdi's early operas. It focuses in particular on the invention of the baritone, on the status of the other woman, i.e. not the primadonna, and on the tenor, the latter viewed especially in light of the three versions of the romanza for Foresto in act 3 of Attila.
