Le terme di Agrippa. Considerazioni preliminari

Research on structures belonging to the so-called Baths of Agrippa in Rome started from the direct survey in the blocks south of the Pantheon, with a view to later expand the survey to contiguous blocks. Direct control so far carried out shows that many walls pertaining to the baths are still preserved and visible within the current buildings, not only in the cellars, but also in the upper floors and sometimes even for several meters high. Research included analyzing detailed urban maps, historical cartography, including the marble Forma Urbis, and documents of historical archives. The text also presents historical-epigraphic sources related to the baths, sometimes providing different interpretations on technical topics. At the present state of research, survey and technical analysis of structures allow to say that the part of the complex which was analyzed belong to the reconstruction of the baths which took place in the fourth century AD; there are only very few walls pertaining to the age of Trajan / Hadrian. There is no evidence of the Agrippan establishment. A partial reconstruction of the complex is based on old and new evidences.

La ricerca sulle strutture appartenenti alle cd. Terme di Agrippa a Roma è partita dalla ricognizione autoptica negli isolati a sud del Pantheon, con la prospettiva di ampliare successivamente l’indagine agli isolati contigui. Il controllo diretto finora effettuato ha permesso di constatare che molti setti murari delle terme sono ancora conservati e visibili all’interno degli edifici attuali, non solo nelle cantine, ma anche a piani superiori e a volte anche per parecchi metri di altezza. Strumenti della ricerca sono stati anche le cartografie di dettaglio urbano, le carte storiche, compresa la Forma Urbis severiana, i documenti degli archivi storici. Il testo presenta anche una rilettura delle fonti storico-epigrafiche che, associata allo studio delle murature, offre nuovi significati. Allo stato attuale della ricerca, il rilievo e l’analisi tecnica delle strutture permettono di dire che i settori del complesso che sono stati analizzati appartengono alla ricostruzione delle terme avvenuta nel IV sec. d. C.; restano solo pochissimi elementi attribuibili ad una fase di età traianea/adrianea. Dell’impianto primoimperiale non esiste alcun elemento. Sulla base della nuova documentazione e dei dati d’archivio viene proposta una parziale ricostruzione del complesso termale.
