The patent documentation at the Central State Archive is a priceless heritage of knowledge about the material culture and design in Italy between 1855 and 1965. It consists mainly of drawings and still needs to be valued by means of drawing and survey. To that end, it is proposed a specific experience that can be referred to the area of survey of industrial design objects, in this case those of free-form. Therefore, it is shown a procedure (to be improved necessarily) as cognitive strategy of the design method of Salvatore Ferragamo, rebuilt from the patent drawings, by working for similarity of “shapes” through digital modeling.

La documentazione brevettuale all’Archivio Centrale dello Stato è un patrimonio inestimabile di conoscenze sulla cultura materiale e sul progetto in Italia tra il 1855 e il 1965. È costituito soprattutto di disegni e deve essere valorizzato ancora per mezzo del disegno e del rilievo. A tale fine è proposta un’esperienza che, seppur particolare, è riferibile all’ambito del rilevamento degli oggetti di disegno industriale, nella fattispecie di quelli a forma libera. È pertanto illustrata una procedura, necessariamente da perfezionare, quale strategia conoscitiva del metodo progettuale di Salvatore Ferragamo, ricostruito a partire dai disegni di brevetto, operando per similarità di “forme” attraverso la modellazione digitale.
