I disegni Lanciani di Pietro Camuccini. Appunti su un artista, mercante e collezionista tra la fine del Settecento e l’inizio dell’Ottocento

This paper examines four unpublished drawings kept in ms. 132 of the Lanciani Fund in BIASA and attributed to Pietro Camuccini (1761-1833). He was an artist, restorer, merchant and collector but was more or less unknown. The drawings represent the four statues of Saints in the Relics loggia in St. Peters, forming the basis of a series of engravings accomplished by Pietro Leone Bombelli in 1781, several examples of which are famous. The print engravings able us to confirm that three of the Lanciani drawings can be attributed to Camuccini, whilst the fourth can be traced back to Costanzo Angelini (1760-1853). These drawings are a rare testimony of Pietro Camuccini’s graphic production, completely unknown up until now, to which must be added three anatomical studies published here. Other key aspects are investigated here regarding the numerous artistic activities carried out by Camuccini during his life time. After having received an artistic education in Rome, Pietro leaves his painting activity and devotes himself to restoring and trading works of art. In 1794 Camuccini goes into partnership with the English merchant Alexander Day (1751-1841), having an important role in the international circulation of numerous painted masterpieces. At the beginning of the nineteenth century he starts to established a personal picture gallery in order to enrich his family’s prestige. After his death, most of his collection was sold by his heir and nephew Giovanni Battista, who reinvested the proceeds in real estate entitling them to Camuccini’s first born child, and soobeying his uncle Pietro’s wishes.

Il presente contributo prende in esame quattro disegni inediti conservati nel ms. 132 del Fondo Lanciani della BIASA e attribuiti a Pietro Camuccini (1761-1833), figura ancora poco nota di artista, restauratore, mercante e collezionista. I disegni rappresentano le quattro statue di santi della Loggia delle Reliquie in San Pietro e costituiscono la base della serie di incisioni realizzata da Pietro Leone Bombelli nel 1781, nota in diversi esemplari. Le iscrizioni sulle stampe permettono di confermare l’attribuzione a Camuccini per tre dei disegni Lanciani, mentre il quarto va ricondotto alla mano di Costanzo Angelini (1760-1853). Questi disegni sono una rara testimonianza della produzione grafica di Pietro Camuccini, finora completamente inedita, a cui si aggiungono altri tre studi anatomici qui pubblicati. Vengono inoltre approfonditi in questa sede alcuni aspetti chiave delle numerose attività artistiche svolte da Camuccini nell’arco della sua vita. Dopo avere ricevuto una formazione artistica in ambiente romano, Pietro abbandona precocemente l’esercizio della pittura per dedicarsi al restauro e al commercio di opere d’arte. Dal 1794 Camuccini si associa con il mercante inglese Alexander Day (1751-1841), svolgendo un ruolo importante nell’ambito della circolazione internazionale di numerosi capolavori pittorici, mentre a partire dai primi anni dell’Ottocento si dedica prevalentemente alla costituzione di una personale quadreria, anche al fine di arricchire il prestigio della propria famiglia. Dopo la sua morte gran parte della collezione viene venduta dall’erede, il nipote Giovanni Battista, che ne reinveste i proventi in beni immobili destinati alla primogenitura Camuccini, obbedendo così alle volontà testamentarie dello zio Pietro.
