SULL’EPISTOLARIO DI UN UMANISTA SENESE DEL QUATTROCENTO

It is now a fact in the bibliography that the epistolary correspondence was in the course of the fifteenth Century an instrument of self-identification and specialized information within an homogeneous intellectual class. The article offers new hints on writing letters in humanistic period and on editing them on the basis of the recent book by P. De Capua, Le lettere di Francesco Patrizi (2014). The activity of this humanist of Siena relives through the relationships with the political authorities and the various cultural institutions, historical events and friendships (especially with Agostino Patrizi Piccolomini). We therefore have the opportunity to reconstruct on a solid philological basis a lively page of the history of literature as a chapter of the history of civilization, culture and transmission of culture.

È un dato ormai acquisito dalla bibliografia che la corrispondenza epistolare fu nel corso del Quattrocento uno strumento di autoidentificazione e di informazione specializzata all’interno di un ceto intellettuale omogeneo. Si offrono al lettore nuovi spunti per riflettere sullo scrivere e sul pubblicare epistolari umanistici prendendo a pretesto il recentissimo volume curato da P. De Capua, Le lettere di Francesco Patrizi (2014). L’attività dell’umanista senese rivive nelle relazioni con le autorità politiche, nei legami con le diverse istituzioni culturali e con gli eventi storici e nei rapporti amicali (in particolare con Agostino Patrizi Piccolomini), tanto da offrire la possibilità di ricostruire su solide basi filologiche una vivace pagina di storia della letteratura intesa come storia della civiltà, della cultura e della trasmissione del sapere.
