This paper describes the main trends of the Italian rail freight system, in terms of traffic data and market shares. A more in-depth analysis of the situation at national level has been also carried out, taking into consideration the liberalization process which affected the European railway freight market starting from 2001 onwards. A selection of “good practices” featuring the Italian market supply has been also presented, aiming at outlining what are, and to what extent, the main key factors for competing in a rail market still affected by the incumbent’s dominant role.

Abstract
This paper describes the main trends of the Italian rail freight system, in terms of traffic data and market shares. A more in-depth analysis of the situation at national level has been also carried out, taking into consideration the liberalization process which affected the European railway freight market starting from 2001 onwards. A selection of “good practices” featuring the Italian market supply has been also presented, aiming at outlining what are, and to what extent, the main key factors for competing in a rail market still affected by the incumbent’s dominant role.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
