Abstract

Units, aggregation, contemporary, reciprocity are just some of the adjectives used to describe the being together concept, that finds in home the very first social and meeting place. But, as says Paulo Mendes da Rocha, «The essence of the house is not the house but it’s the address of the house; the coexistence of urban space» and therefore purely residential architecture should be considered in a broader view, in relation to the city. The house is effectively regarded as a set of factors such as: housing units, public services, networks and equipment, all essential components in any strategic plan for sustainable development and socio- space inclusion. Identifying problems and offering solutions for the definition of urban space are common worries in contemporary architecture. In Brazil and in Latin America this is particularly true and in São Paulo has become the norm. Here, 1.2 million inhabitants live in informal settlements, among a population of 11.9 million. Studies on South America megalopolis have highlighted similar processes of urban expansion such as Darwin transformations. In this examples there appears an absence of choice between the houses of the affluent classes, which are increasingly ironclad, and informal settlements which are more and more remote. Starting from the study carried out in the favela of Paraisópolis, based on the methodological union of Post-Occupancy Evaluation and Fuzzy Logic, and the remarks made in the Urban Community Dom Helder Camara at Jadira (SP) and in the Vila Nova Esperança, this work offers an analysis of living together, sharing, regulating and managing the common space. Through three cases-studies, reflecting three different precarious contexts, the first interested in a substantial upgrading programme, the second in a residential intervention realised in self-construction and the third not yet subject to substantial redevelopment actions; it is intended to highlight the potentialities and the limitations of a re-composing which should not only consider architectonical-space oriented but also economical and social nuances. Such re-composing is a challenge for the housing management and needs the active involvement of the community: the participatory process, before and after the building, is considered more and more useful to create a common consciousness on what is going to be constructed in the environment protection, on the use and the safeguard of the public spaces and on living together, beyond the «doorway».
