In recent years, Italian universities have experienced the development of a system of evaluation that, although not immune from critics and weaknesses, has increasingly been used as a key reference for the adoption of appropriate corrective measures and / or incentives aimed to the improvement of the performance of the whole of Italian universities, regarding to the quality both of teaching and research. Purpose of this paper is to analyze weaknesses and strengths of the system of evaluation of the universities in Italy, trying to provide a framework to be used for future international investigations and comparisons.

Abstract
