In the study of the biography of the chemist Emanuele Patern˜ there is a mixture of passion for research and the political and social engagement. The article explores a particular aspect of character that distinguished him throughout his life, from the time of Palermo where he was mayor of the city and President of the Province to the subsequent transfer to Rome with his appointment as Senator of the kingdom. This political commitment also accompanied him during the last years of his life when, in the writings and deeds, he firmly expressed his independence from and dislike for the Fascist regime.
