The purpose of this work is to understand the origins, the current state-of-the-art and the possible future research directions on PSS, in order to give an overview of the current knowledge, discover gaps in existing literature and identify interesting topics for further research. The methodology used is a systematic review of 288 papers about PSS. We identified three main current research streams: sustainability, business models connected to PSS and collaborative consumption. Some general aspects, i.e. example tools and methodologies for PSS planning and implementation, are common results to these researches. Finally, we propose and discuss main future research directions.
