Open planar structures including wire-medium slabs with vertically aligned wires are studied by means of a transverse equivalent network representation of the relevant homogenized structure. Modal properties are thereby retrieved via transverse resonance, whilst far-field patterns generated by elementary sources are calculated via reciprocity. The use of wire-medium layers to suppress radiation due to TEM and TM2 leaky modes in a Fabry-Perot cavity antenna excited by a vertical electric dipole is demonstrated, thus obtaining wideband leakywave radiation from the TM1 leaky mode in the form of a linearly polarized conical pattern with wide angular scan range.
