The rebirth of the water in Rome. Aqueducts and fountains

From the era of imperial splendor, Rome remained in the fifth century AD without that great heritage of water that had characterized for many centuries its power, until it was resumed in the fifteenth century the Virgin water and then the other waters. Barbarian hordes, vandalism and neglect of later centuries destroyed a great heritage of engineering and technology, forcing the citizenship of Rome to drink the water of the river Tiber, preferable to polluted sources for the state of neglect of the ducts. The first signs of a revival of the waters were already evident in the fifteenth century, intensified further in the following centuries. A series of repairs and new interventions of high technology and engineering wanted by the Popes brought back in Rome the ancient and copious flow of water to meet the needs of the population and helping to promote numerous projects and exhibitions monumental fountains that transformed the city's image. The contribution is to analyze and document the value of water related to engineering and architecture, through some examples, as part of the rich cultural heritage of the city of Rome, highlighting what once represented and what today is for the protection and enhancement aware of historic urban landscape.

Dall’epoca degli imperiali splendori Roma rimase nel V secolo d.C. priva di quel grande patrimonio di acqua che aveva caratterizzato per tanti secoli la sua potenza, fino a quando non venne riallacciata nel XV secolo l’acqua Vergine e successivamente le altre acque. Un grande patrimonio di ingegneria e di tecnologie fu distrutto dalle orde barbariche, dai vandalismi e dall’incuria dei secoli successivi, costringendo la cittadinanza di Roma a bere l’acqua del fiume Tevere, preferibile alle fonti inquinate per lo stato di abbandono delle canalizzazioni. I primi cenni di una rinascita delle acque furono evidenti già nel XV secolo, intensificandosi maggiormente nei secoli successivi, in cui una serie di riparazioni e di nuovi interventi di alta tecnologia e di ingegneria voluta dai Papi ricondusse nella città di Roma l’antico e copioso flusso d’acqua per soddisfare i bisogni della popolazione e contribuendo a favorire numerosi progetti di monumentali mostre e fontane che trasformarono l’immagine della città. Il contributo si propone di analizzare e di documentare attraverso alcuni esempi il valore dell’acqua legato all’ingegneria e all’architettura espresso nell’ambito del ricco patrimonio culturale della città di Roma, mettendo in evidenza ciò che un tempo ha rappresentato e ciò che oggi rappresenta per una tutela e valorizzazione consapevole del paesaggio urbano storico.
