By rejecting both an approach to religion as a consistent set of beliefs (Rawls' comprehensive doctrines) and the concept of religion as a pre-linguistic content that needs to be translated into generally acceptable reasons (Habermas), the comment deals with the opposition between state and church as it occurs in Western democracies (with a particular focus on Italy and the relations between the Italian Republic and the Vatican state). The double shift from politics to state and from religion to church - primarily conceived as a community of believers - is meant to shed light on both the communitarian/institutional relevance and the social dimension of what generally comes under the umbrella term of religion. Accordingly, the triad of religion/faith/church, in their different meanings, is not primarily approached as an individualistic experience, but as an interactional dimension that cannot be neither reduced to some prescriptive rules nor limited to ritual behaviour.
Rifiutando un approccio tanto rawlsiano alla religione, quale “comprehensive doctrine”, quanto habermasiano a essa, quale risorsa pre-linguistica di senso, conservata nel rito e bisognevole di una traduzione in ragioni per tutti accessibili, la nota critica affronta la questione del confronto tra Stato e Chiesa nelle attuali democrazie occidentali (con particolare riguardo all’Italia ovvero al rapporto tra la Repubblica italiana del II dopoguerra e la Chiesa italiana). Il duplice spostamento di prospettiva, dalla politica allo Stato e dalla religione alla Chiesa, qui intesa quale comunità di credenti, cerca di mettere in luce la rilevanza comunitario-istituzionale e la dimensione sociale di quanto sussunto sotto il generico termine di religione. Di conseguenza il complesso triadico religione/fede/chiesa viene illuminato non primariamente quale esperienza individuale o credenza bensì quale dimensione relazionale di interazione, non riducibile né a regole prescrittive di condotta per il singolo né a pratica rituale.
