La crisi politica, finanziaria e militare che colpì l’Impero ottomano tra il 1875 e il 1878 sfibrò ulteriormente la già debole Porta, che da anni si trovava in gravi difficoltà, e fu sorretta solo dalla volontà di alcune delle grandi potenze europee per conservare l’equilibrio internazionale.Il 3 marzo 1878 venne quindi siglata la pace di Santo Stefano, all’Impero ottomano rimanevano l’Albania e la Tracia in Europa, mentre la Serbia, il Montenegro e la Romania diventavano indipendenti, la Russia acquisiva la Bessarabia e veniva creata la grande Bulgaria, tributaria della Porta, che si estendeva dal Mar Nero al Mare Egeo. Questo il panorama internazionale che fa da sfondo al periodo oggetto di questo studio che “prova” a ricostruire lo “stato” della società ottomana alla vigilia della Prima guerra mondiale.
