To analyse technological trends and the constant reduction over the years of installed power and energy consumption for the lighting of tennis courts, a category two playing court was taken as a case study, adopting the specifications provided for by existing standards (UNI 12193). The article seeks to compare the various technological possibilities, with special reference to cost/benefit ratios, of: - a typical installation of the 1970s-80s using incandescent halogen lamps; - a typical installation of the 1990s using high-pressure sodium lamps; - a latest generation installation using LED lamps. After having obtained comparable results for the three lighting installation types, their economic feasibility was evaluated using the free software ECOCALC. The energy - and economic- related results of simulations carried out for the three types of installation are given in the article. In terms of both installation and running costs, the economically least expensive installation, thanks to a well-established technology, is that using high-pressure sodium lamps. The installation based on halogen lamps has similar installation costs to that of sodium lamps, but operating costs for the whole life of the installation are clearly more expensive. This solution is one confined to the past. LED technology is the most promising in terms of light efficiency, potential lifetime and compact nature of the lighting equipment. For this technology to become commercially appealing, it will however be necessary to wait for the sale of fifth generation LEDs, which promise an efficiency of 200 ÷ 250 lm/W as well as lower production costs. Abstract
