El sentido ambiguo de las limitaciones rituales de la mujer. El caso de la Iyanifa del conjunto Ocha / Ifa

This essay takes its cue from a work published by Sherry Ortner in 1972 in order to develop a reflection on the reasons which determined, in various forms of social life, women’s condition of social and ritual inferiority. Arguably, these reasons can be individuated in women’s greater subordination – in comparison to men – to the needs of the species; subordination that concretizes in the reproductive function and in the various practices aiming at rearing and socializing new members of society. Although this condition of inferiority emerged with the institution of society, it is still present today, and is manifested, for example, in the debate concerning the allocation of leading religious roles in the Ocha / Ifá complex. It seems that only the development of bourgeois society, and the interchangeability of the two sexes in employment, have created the conditions for an effective equality – an equality which, however, in order to be fully realized, must take into account the ineradicable differences between man and woman.

El ensayo se inspira en el escrito de Sherry Ortner de 1972 para reflexionar sobre las razones que han impuesto, en las distintas formas de vida social, la condición de inferioridad social y ritual de la mujer. La autora opina que estas razones están en la mayor subordinación de la mujer a las exigencias de la especie respecto al hombre; subordinación que se concreta en la función reproductora y en todas aquellas prácticas que tienen como finalidad la crianza y la socialización de los nuevos miembros de la sociedad. La autora opina también que solo en las sociedad contemporánea están presentes las condiciones que permiten la emancipación completa de la mujer.
