Gioacchino Volpe: gli anni della prima formazione, 1892-1895

This research looks at the first moments of the intellectual and political life of Giocchino Volpe: his family influences, in particular from his grandfather, member of the Carbonary society and patriot during the Risorgimento’ s rising in Abruzzi in 1848; his high school education influenced by Carducci “Poet of History”, who provided him the pattern of a national and popular understanding of Italian Middle Ages; his entrance exam to Scuola Normale di Pisa in the presence of Francesco De Sanctis patriotic and lay way of teaching. The early education of the young Volpe is an important clue to portray the birth of the future scholar of Medioeval Modern and Contemporary Age, from the fortunes of the City State of Pisa, between XII and XIII century, to Risorgimento, first World War and Fascism.
