Abstract

In the rural area of the Italian province of Foggia, in the summer a ghetto is formed, made up of some houses and numerous shacks inhabited by immigrants mostly from Sub-Saharan Western Africa. The immigrants of the Grand Ghetto, who often possess regular residence permits, work almost entirely in the agriculture system doing odd and underpaid jobs, without legal protection and become the new slaves of the contemporary era. During winter one hundred and fifty people live in the houses of the area, but in the summer months, coinciding with the harvest of products grown in the area, especially tomatoes and watermelons, the immigrants become over a thousand. The absence of essential services is primarily taken care of by non-profit organizations. Located on the border of three Municipalities in the province of Foggia, the site of the Grand Ghetto is not even an appropriately acknowledged geographically, because it is often wrongly attributed to one or another Municipality, leaving this problematic reality to remain invisible. The study comes from a field survey of the Author and her interviews with privileged witnesses.
