Abstract

Bernard Picart (1673-1733) is one of the most talented and remarkable engravers of the intellectual movement known as “Radical Enlightenment”. My essay investigates the presence and the role of Descartes’ image in Picart’s iconographic work: especially noteworthy is a portrait of Descartes until now unknown, and published here for the first time. My research also explores the Jansenist context out of which the first biography of Descartes, written by the abbé Baillet, had originated; it is for this very volume that Picart was required to provide a few engravings. My work also sheds new light on the connections between Jansenism and Cartesianism in late 17th and early 18th century French culture.
