Il χρῶμα e la dottrina degli status negli scolii tardoantichi a Ermogene

The issue of the meaning of χρῶμα in Late Antique rhetorical theory is dealt with through an examination of the usages of such technical term in the scholia collections Py an Π on Hermogenes’ Περὶ στάσεων, in Syrianus’ commentary and in Georgios Monos’ unpublished commentary. These sources (4th­5th cent. AD) display greater flexibility in the usage of term χρῶμα than it was admitted in previous studies: indeed it may apply even to rhetorical status (ἀντίληψις, ὅρος) other than στοχασμός. The acknowledgement of such variety enables also to recognize the continuity in em­ ployment of term “colour” between rhetorical teaching of the first Imperial Age and Late Antique scholia.

La questione del significato di χρῶμα nella dottrina retorica tardoantica viene affron- tata in un esame sistematico degli usi di tale termine tecnico nelle raccolte Py e Π di scolii al Περὶ στάσεων di Ermogene, nel commento di Siriano e nel commento inedito di Giorgio Monos. Queste fonti (IV-V sec. d.C.) dimostrano una maggiore flessibilità, nell’uso del termine χρῶμα, di quella ammessa negli studi precedenti sull’argomento: la nozione di χρῶμα può, infatti, essere applicata anche ad altri status retorici (ἀντίληψις, ὅρος) oltre a quello dello στοχασμός. Il riconoscimento di questa varietà di impieghi da parte dei commentatori tardoantichi consente anche di rilevare la continuità nell’uso del “colore” rispetto all’insegnamento retorico della prima età imperiale.
