Objectives: In the field of dental impaction, particular attention has recently been focused on problems related to the non-eruption of the molars. The aim of this report is to provide clinicians with useful information for immediate management of this condition. Materials and methods: After a preliminary review of the mechanisms underlying eruption and eruption-related disorders, the authors examine in detail epidemiological, pathogenetic, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of impacted molars. This is followed by a review of the literature on the disimpaction procedures and an analysis of the personal experience of the authors. Results and Conclusions: Accurate knowledge of the etiopathogenetic mechanisms and careful monitoring allow prompt diagnosis and treatment of these disorders, which increase the likelihood of successful outcomes. © 2012 Elsevier Srl.
