This contribution pays attention to the two principal architectural projects elaborated by Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1839) during the last years of his life, in particular, to the ones regarding the Palazzo della Posta in piazza Colonna in Rome and the ‘restoration’ of Porta Maggiore and its urban context redefinition. These two projects, which were entwined together with the description of the architect’s death, by his biographer Ignazio Ciampi, were the cause of disagreements and at the same time, represented the last sparks of Valadier’s glory. New acquisitions, among which there were some drawings and documents that trace back to the two episodes – above all the first, not well documented properly –, have allowed us to define precisely the architectural events, giving us the occasion to advance some reflections and considerations regarding the artistic and cultural atmosphere in Rome during the forties of the 19th C., and in particular the changes carried out.

Abstract
This contribution pays attention to the two principal architectural projects elaborated by Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1839) during the last years of his life, in particular, to the ones regarding the Palazzo della Posta in piazza Colonna in Rome and the ‘restoration’ of Porta Maggiore and its urban context redefinition. These two projects, which were entwined together with the description of the architect’s death, by his biographer Ignazio Ciampi, were the cause of disagreements and at the same time, represented the last sparks of Valadier’s glory. New acquisitions, among which there were some drawings and documents that trace back to the two episodes – above all the first, not well documented properly –, have allowed us to define precisely the architectural events, giving us the occasion to advance some reflections and considerations regarding the artistic and cultural atmosphere in Rome during the forties of the 19th C., and in particular the changes carried out.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
