The article proposes a comprehensive explanation of many of the iconographic elements of Borromini's work at the Sapienza which still poses several questions, to say the least. The main thrust is on the repetitive theme of the corona (or rather of the two corona) and Borromini's use of binary design. The author's interpretation of the spiral on the clerestory is in line with previous studies. Finally, the decisive role of the sphere at the top of the building is also discussed. The iconographic elements are interpreted taking into consideration the way in which Borromini's architectural and spatial choices developed over time. Iconography is never a decorative layer laid over unrelated spatial material: reinforced by spatial and organisational decisions, iconographic choices represent the building's power house. The "pattern" in Sant'Ivo lies in this indissoluble mix; it is the nerve centre of Borromini's design and, at the same time, the secret behind the building.
