Between the 16th and 17th century, the Roman ecclesiastical hierarchies undertook to dam the wide-spreading female prostitution in the city by providing a series of sanctions but also trying to redeem these women by setting up some institutions to recover them. Therefore several establishments were founded: the monasteries of Santa Maria Maddalena al Corso and of San Giacomo alla Lungara for former prostitutes who wanted to became cloistered nuns; the holy houses of Santa Marta, Santa Chiara and Santa Croce alle Scalette for women who were forced to prostitute by their husbands and for prostitutes who didn’t want to profess solemn vows; the conservatoire of Santa Caterina dei Funari for the daughters of courtesans; the communities of San Filippo Neri and of Santa Maria del Rifugio for other misguided women. Different were the procedures and requirements to be accepted in these institutes, often overburdened by debts and troubled by internal unrest and conflicts.
