The essay provides an overview of the dowry customs followed in Roman female monasteries in the Rome of the Counter-Reformation. The matter was undoubtedly complex and closely intertwined with the issue of respect for the enclosure: if the nuns had not been equipped, they would have to maintain frequent relations with the outside in order to procure the money necessary to maintain themselves. Hence, especially after the Council of Trent, the recruitment of new generations of the nuns "coriste" depended not only on their vocation - real or not - but also on the possession of certain economic resources.

Il saggio fornisce una panoramica sulle usanze dotali seguite nei monasteri femminili romani nella Roma della Controriforma. La materia si intrecciava strettamente con la questione del rispetto della clausura: se le monache non fossero state dotate, avrebbero dovuto intrattenere frequenti rapporti con l’esterno per procurarsi il denaro necessario a mantenersi. Soprattutto dopo il Concilio di Trento dunque, il reclutamento delle nuove generazioni di monache coriste dipese non solo dalla loro vocazione – reale o meno che fosse – ma anche dal possesso di determinate risorse economiche.
