In this paper a very accurate approximation method is developed, that leads to explicit expressions for the loss probability of the M/G/1/K and GI/M/1/K queues. The results can also be generalized to the corresponding discrete-time queueing models, i.e. the Geo/G/1/K and GI/Geo/1/K queues. The approximations obtained by this method are asymptotically correct as the buffer size increases. Moreover, they can be inverted, thus allowing a very effective buffer dimensioning to be done. © 1993.
