An analysis of Verg. georg. ii 513-542 shows a number of peculiarities that can only be explained as signs of a reworking by the poet, who felt the necessity of ending book ii on a more positive note, that is by combining the joys of the vita rustica with the glorious history of Italy and Rome (a synthesis crucial in the forthcoming Aeneid ). The analysis is extended to the structure of the poem in its entirety, aimed at identifying the various stages of composition of the text. Callimachus’ Aitia prove once again to be a fundamental modelfor the structure of the Georgics.
