What happens when the great traditional paradigm of visual arts that for centuries had fully been functional for the theoretical purposes of art is suddenly threatened by the irreverence of an art that does not resemble to anything anymore? Abstract art, the readymade, and Pop Art are the first artistic forms to suggest the idea of a definitive breakup between the art of the past, under the sign of mimesis, and the art of the future, which is emancipated from the mimesis. Art, since the 1960s, renounces to the mimetic representation of reality to act as a symbolic representation of the same. Retracing briefly the philosophical analysis on the status of art theorized by Arthur Danto we proceed keeping in mind art as embodied meaning, as an expression of self, marking the increasing importance of the meaning of works of art as opposed to its mere formal and representational values. The art in the contemporary era is explained not through what it represents, but by what it expresses.
Cosa succede quando il grande paradigma tradizionale delle arti visive che per secoli era stato pienamente funzionale agli scopi teorici dell’arte si trova improvvisamente messo a repentaglio dall’irriverenza di un’arte che non somiglia più a nulla? L’arte astratta, il ready-made, la Pop Art sono le prime forme artistiche a suggerire l’idea di una rottura definitiva tra l’arte del passato, sotto il segno della mimesi, e l’arte dell’avvenire, che dalla mimesi si emancipa. L’arte, a partire dagli anni Sessanta, rinuncia alla rappresentazione mimetica della realtà per porsi come rappresentazione simbolica della stessa. Ripercorrendo brevemente l’analisi filosofica sullo statuto dell’arte teorizzata da Arthur Danto si procede tenendo conto dell’arte come significato incarnato, come espressione del sé, sottolineando l’importanza sempre maggiore assunta dal significato delle opere d’arte in opposizione a quelli che sono i suoi meri valori formali e rappresentazionali. L’arte nell’era contemporanea viene spiegata non più attraverso ciò che rappresenta, ma attraverso ciò che esprime.
