A new thermodynamic treatment of self-gravitating systems is given in the "mean field approximation". The introduction of a suitable effective potential lets a King-like distribution function to be led to a Boltzmann one. In this context, the stability of the equilibrium configurations is investigated under small departures from thermal equilibrium.
