With an overview on 27 theatrical passacaglias (from Puccini to Ligeti, through Berg, Hindemith, Sostakovich, Britten etc.) here is demonstrated as the repetitive sectional form is always representative of altered states of mind. More precisely the passacaglia represents characters affected by mental disease like repetitive coaction or loosening of the perception of time, as Alfred Adler studied in the first decade of XX century.
Attraverso 27 passacaglie teatrali esaminate (da Puccini a Ligeti, passando per Berg, Hindemith, Sostakovich, Britten ecc.) si evidenza come la forma a sezioni ripetitive sia in tutti i casi impiegata per rappresentare personaggi e situazioni di disagio mentale; più precisamente la sindrome della coazione ripetitiva e la perdita del senso del tempo secondo gli studi di Alfred Adler
