Abstract

The principle of innovation has been gradually introduced in economic and social science, finding application both in the choices of public economy (with regard to the decision-making processes of public policy-makers) and in the decisions of local economy (about the projects linked to socio-economi local development) and also in the governing and managing logic of the single business organization. Since years, receiving new impetus from specific economic shocks - such as the crisis started in 2008 -, a wide-ranging interdisciplinary debate about the possibility of considering innovation -mostly technological innovation- as the basic conceptual frame work of modern scientific thinking is still in progress.: The following work is linked to the framework whose investigation object is the principle of innovation for the context and for the single firm, with particular attention to the impact on the general systemic (in this case, the Viable Systems Approach or VSA) notions that are focused on the concepts of method, tool and technique that are calling for a paradigm shift in order to promote the development of the Mediterranean. More in detail, we intend to achieve the following research objectives: demonstrate the compatibility and even full coherence between innovation and systemic approach; Check the contact points between sustainability and new theories of management, such as Viable Systems Approach (VSA); determine the impact that innovation and technology have on value creation, as consolidated in business economics and corporate finance; claim the significance of the principle of innovation in the theory and practice of business, at the same time clarifying its limits and place in the context of other, perhaps more salient, points of business science.
