The life of Luigi Balsamo (San Damiano d’Asti 1926 - Bologna 2012), librarian and bibliographic superintendent in Sardinia and Emilia-Romagna, then professor of Bibliography and Library Science at the University of Parma, was all marked by a firm and rigorous commitment to scholarship combined with a deep and serious civil commitment for libraries, the book and the dissemination of culture. With his research for over half a century, since the Fifties until his death, with his university teaching and as editor of «La Bibliofilía» and of important series, he made a decisive contribution to the development of studies in the history of the book and of bibliography.
