Over all his life Giovanni Boccaccio was a tireless copyist of manuscripts and on many occasions had to solve the question of what was the most suitable form to bequeath works in Latin and in the vernacular of the other two crowns of the fourteenth-century literature. This research examines from the point of view of palaeography and codicology the physiognomy of the manuscripts of Dante and Petrarch copied by him (starting with those transcribed in youth and ending with those arranged in old age), with the aim of reconstructing copy’s techniques and of decoding the symbolic value of the innovative choices for mise-en-page implemented by the Certaldese.
Giovanni Boccaccio fu un copista instancabile e in molte occasioni si misurò con il problema di quale fosse la forma-libro più adatta per trasmettere le opere in latino e in volgare delle altre due corone della letteratura trecentesca. Il percorso di ricerca qui proposto esamina la fisionomia paleografica e codicologica dei manoscritti danteschi e petrarcheschi di sua mano (da quelli trascritti nella prima giovinezza fino a quelli confezionati nella tarda vecchiaia), con l’obiettivo di ricostruire le tecniche di copia e di decodificare il valore simbolico delle innovative scelte di messa in pagina attuate dal certaldese.
