Paola Italia publishes the second half of the notes on Giacomo Leopardi taken by Gadda in 1924 when he was a student at the Accademia Scientifico Letteraria in Milan. All are now part of Gadda’s Archive at the Archivio Contemporaneo ‘A. Bonsanti’ in Florence. The notes pertain to an extensive reading of a 19th-century edition of the Operette Morali, owned by Gadda’s brother Enrico. Showing the profound impact of Leopardi’s thinking on Gadda’s theory, the notes demonstrate an appreciation of the poet’s philosophical ideas and also exhibit a contrastive approach, comparing Leopardi’s outlook, including its strengths and weaknesses, and Gadda’s own. This publication thefore provides great insight into the Engineer’s early way of thinking.
