Scritture e lingue nel Lazio protostorico e nell'Ager Faliscus: un bilancio

This work, published in the volumes that celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the "Annali dell’Istituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli” is a ‘Forschungsbericht’ dedicated to the oldest documentary history of the Latin and Faliscan areas. The bibliography of the last thirty years is the subject of recognition and focus of a thorough discussion divided into several sections. In the center of the work lies the relationship between linguistic history and epigraphical hermeneutics, typically the characteristics of any study of ‘Restsprachen’. The sections are devoted specifically : (1) to the organic descriptions of the early linguistic history and of Latium Vetus and Ager Faliscus, (2) to the use of new methods of sociolinguistic study applied to the ancient texts, (3) to the new epigraphic finds discovered during the last decades in the Latium vetus, and (4) in the Ager Faliscus, (5) to the the social and communicational functions of the Greek Euboic alphabet in the center-Italic area, (6) to the transmission channels of the Greek-Etruscan writing, (7) to the identification of the different outbreaks of different types of ‘foyers’ of the alphabetic types, with particular attention to the dialectic between cities (including Rome) and suburban varieties, (8) to the updated comment, together with various interpretative proposals, of the ten most important early Latin inscriptions (before the fifth century B.C.), (9) to the debate around the so-called 'Faliscan problem', in the light of the many epigraphic artifacts that have been discovered in recent years. The reference bibliography includes 430 titles.
