This paper deals with a handful of Latin inscriptions found in the ancient Praeneste. These inscriptions have been engraved on small mirrors, which have been presumably manufactered by Etruscan artisans between the 4th and the 3rd century BC. A close inspection of the language of these micro-texts, mainly mythological names of Greek origin, clearly demonstrates that the inscriptions have been written by Etruscans with a limited competence of Latin language (L2). Morpho-syntactical idiosyncracies, e.g. accusative forms instead of nominative forms, should be explained in terms of interference between Etruscan and Latin alignments.

Abstract
This paper deals with a handful of Latin inscriptions found in the ancient Praeneste. These inscriptions have been engraved on small mirrors, which have been presumably manufactered by Etruscan artisans between the 4th and the 3rd century BC. A close inspection of the language of these micro-texts, mainly mythological names of Greek origin, clearly demonstrates that the inscriptions have been written by Etruscans with a limited competence of Latin language (L2). Morpho-syntactical idiosyncracies, e.g. accusative forms instead of nominative forms, should be explained in terms of interference between Etruscan and Latin alignments.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
