Purpose: This paper investigates which opportunities the companies may have to learn the agility of the supply chain from humanitarian emergency management, in order to increase their competitiveness. Methodology: To investigate the research question a literature review and an empirical exploratory investigation were conducted through qualitative methodology based on case studies. In particular, in the empirical part it has deepened the initiative of the “Logistics Emergency Teams”, the first and only case at the international level of a partnership between a group of logistics companies and humanitarian sector in organizing logistics operations for emergency response. Findings: The literature and the operational reality analysed reveal that businesses can really take the opportunity to learn agility from humanitarian best practices. This is done by cooperating in disaster response operations, in the restore phase, and by sharing concretely - at operational and strategic levels - objectives, principles and guidelines of agility implemented in the humanitarian supply chain. Research limitations: This exploratory study, despite having provided original ideas on the subject, needs to be deepened in the empirical part, with additional interviews to the representatives of the logistics service providers. Research and managerial implications: The experience that companies make when working with the humanitarian sector not only contributes to the success of relief operations, but it also enhances the competitiveness of individual firms, if they are able to adopt and transfer the learned skills in their business supply chains. Originality/value of paper: The present study is one of the first attempt in academic and professional literature to investigate what companies can learn from the humanitarian sector, while in the past the emphasis was especially on the reverse process of learning.
Obiettivo del paper: Il presente contributo indaga quali opportunità hanno le imprese di imparare l’agilità della supply chain dal settore umanitario nella gestione delle emergenze, al fine di incrementare la propria competitività. Metodologia: Per indagare la domanda di ricerca si sono svolte una review della letteratura e un’indagine empirica di natura esplorativa, con metodologia qualitativa basata sullo studio di casi. In particolare, nella parte empirica si è approfondita l’iniziativa dei “Logistics Emergency Teams”, il primo e unico caso a livello internazionale di partnership tra un gruppo d’imprese logistiche e il settore umanitario nell’organizzazione logistica delle operazioni di risposta alle emergenze. Risultati: La letteratura e la realtà operativa analizzate mettono in evidenza che le imprese possono realmente cogliere l’opportunità di apprendere l’agilità dalle best practice umanitarie. Ciò avviene cooperando nelle operazioni di risposta a un disastro, nella fase di primo soccorso, e condividendo concretamente - a livello operativo e strategico - obiettivi, principi e linee-guida dell’agilità implementati nella supply chain umanitaria. Limiti della ricerca: Questo studio esplorativo, pur avendo fornito spunti inediti sul tema, necessita di essere ampliato nella parte empirica, con ulteriori interviste agli esponenti delle imprese logistiche coinvolte. Implicazioni pratiche: L’esperienza che le imprese fanno durante la collaborazione col settore umanitario non solo contribuisce alla migliore riuscita dell’intervento di soccorso, ma potenzia la capacità competitiva delle singole imprese, se queste riescono a far proprie e trasferire le competenze apprese nella gestione ordinaria della propria supply chain commerciale. Originalità del lavoro: La prospettiva indagata nella presente ricerca è assai originale negli studi accademici e professionali; solo recentemente, infatti, si sta ponendo attenzione su cosa le imprese possono apprendere dal settore umanitario, mentre nel passato l’enfasi era posta specialmente sul processo inverso di apprendimento.
