New remarks upon a group of rock-cut sanctuaries in Cilicia Tracheia, most of which being concentrated in the region between the rivers Kalykadnos and Lamos, can be made through the reconsideration of a rock-cut inscription carved inside a natural cave in the Kalykadnos valley, a few km to the north of Seleukeia: the text, concerning the purchase of the priesthood of Athena en Tagais and the dedication of some infrastructures within the sanctuary, gives us interesting details on the architectural layout of this sacred place. The comparison with other similar rock-cut sanctuaries - at Yapılıkaya (north-west of Elaioussa Sebaste) and Sulucin (in the Lamas valley) – which are in a very good state of preservation, gives us more important information on this kind of buildings, peculiar to the area. These worship places are generally isolated and far from urban centers; neither wide nor monumental, they were however so important to the local population that restoration and decoration activities were carried out until the Roman imperial period. This fact demonstrates how strong were the indigenous cults in Cilicia, where local divine figures, probably dating back to the Hittite traditions, were still venerated after the assimilation to Graeco-Roman gods like Zeus, Hermes, Athena.

Abstract
This fact demonstrates how strong were the indigenous cults in Cilicia, where local divine figures, probably dating back to the Hittite traditions, were still venerated after the assimilation to Graeco-Roman gods like Zeus, Hermes, Athena.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
