In this paper we define a distortion measure based on perception laws for detecting complicated objects over different backgrounds. In particular, we focus on the automatic detection of semi-transparent blotches on old photographic prints. This kind of degradation is difficult to manage since it alters without destroying image content but, at the same time, it is visible at the first glance over a variety of images with different subjects. The aim of the work is to tune a perception based threshold able to separate these two different and complex patterns. This task is accomplished by simulating the human eye process in the analysis of a scene. This strategy allows us to detect blotches in a simple and completely automatic way and reveals great potential also in critical cases, as shown by experimental results.
