This paper discusses Giacomo Leopardi's concept of "pellegrino", i.e., the effect of semantic indeterminacy raised by "words" as distinct from "terms", that have a merely conventional value. It is argued that Aristotle's "Poetics" could be the source of Leopardi's distinction; it is also suggested that Leopardi's theory was an original contribution to the European Philosophy of language in the XIXth century.

Abstract
This paper discusses Giacomo Leopardi's concept of "pellegrino", i.e., the effect of semantic indeterminacy raised by "words" as distinct from "terms", that have a merely conventional value. It is argued that Aristotle's "Poetics" could be the source of Leopardi's distinction; it is also suggested that Leopardi's theory was an original contribution to the European Philosophy of language in the XIXth century.File allegati a questo prodotto
