The object of this paper is the photographic reproduction of the Ottateuco di Smirne, a manuscript of the Twelfth century from the school of Constantinople, which was destroyed by fire in 1922 during the Greco-Turkish War. Until then the old codex was preserved in the library of the Evangelical School in Smyrna, the current Izmir. At the Federico Zeri Foundation in Bologna is possible to find the only complete photographic reproduction of the codex’s miniatures so far known. The 329 photographs became part of the photo archive thanks to Antonio Muñoz (1884-1960) who donated them to his cousin Federico Zeri (1921-1998) around the end of the 50s of the twentieth century. Muñoz, who was a well known roman Art Historian, studied for many years the byzantine and early medieval miniature, both in Italy and in the Mediterranean countries. L’oggetto di studio di questo contributo è la riproduzione fotografica dell’Ottateuco di Smirne, codice miniato del XII secolo di scuola costantinopolitana, distrutto da un incendio nel 1922 durante la guerra greco-turca. Fino ad allora l’antico codice era conservato all’interno della Biblioteca della Scuola Evangelica di Smirne, l’attuale Izmir. Presso la Fondazione Federico Zeri di Bologna si conserva l’unica riproduzione fotografica integrale delle miniature del codice finora conosciuta. Le 329 fotografie sono giunte nella Fototeca grazie ad Antonio Muñoz (1884-1960) che le dona al cugino Federico Zeri (1921-1998) intorno alla fine degli anni Cinquanta del Novecento. Muñoz, noto storico dell’arte romano, studia per molti anni la miniatura bizantina e altomedievale, sia in Italia che nei paesi del Mediterraneo. Durante i suoi soggiorni a Istanbul ha la possibilità di consultare gli antichi codici conservati presso la Biblioteca del Serraglio. Proprio in virtù delle sue conoscenze in materia, nel 1905 collabora con il suo maestro Adolfo Venturi alla realizzazione della mostra italo-bizantina di Grottaferrata, prima esposizione europea interamente dedicata a opere e manufatti bizantini. Muñoz negli anni raccoglie un numero cospicuo di immagini (circa 2.500), che conserva nella sua fototeca privata. I suoi studi si concentrano anche sulle fotografie dell’Ottateuco di Smirne, lo dimostrano le numerose annotazioni manoscritte sul retro delle immagini e sui supporti cartacei che le contengono. Mediante questo contributo mi propongo di confrontarle con le fotografie dell’Ottateuco pubblicate nel 1909 da Dirk Christiaan Hesseling, facendo emergere analogie e differenze.
