The volume Gabriels and the Italian Cute Nymphet (Rome, Museo Canonica, Mazzotta 2012) presents a selection of artworks by Italian artist Paolo Gabrielli, prefaced by a dense essay by Giancarlo Carpi and postscripts on single works by the artist himself. Carpi's essay deals with the concept of cute, its connections with goods and communication; the transformation of classical Cupid in “kewpie” in American illustrations in the beginning of 20th C; the importance of cuteness in Art Nouveau style, in cartoon design, and its transmigration in Japanese art. All these items have a role in explaining Paolo Gabrielli's works, shiny refined bronze figures transformable through internal mechanical articulations. Titles, too, are the product of assemblage of words and concepts, evoking multiple meanings dealing with classical, modern and post-modern culture. The most relevant artwork (as far as Engramma researchs are concerned), is Ninfa moderna, a bronze toy with cyberskin sexual details, referring to nympha in scientific, artistic, literary, philosphical and critical ways.
