The morphological study of medieval urban fabric applies new methods to process all available information. Within the debate between continuity and discontinuity of classical rural settlements and the medieval fortified settlements, some small towns in different regions of Europe show analogies and close continuity between the roman villae rusticae system and the fortified hilltop towns through a hilledge phase prior to the fortification.
