The exhibition Manet. Return to Venice, hosted in the Doge's Palace, focuses on the importance of Venice (where Manet went twice) and Venetian painting in the development of Manet's choices of subjects and style. Masterpieces such as Olympia, The Balcon, Emile Zola's portrait, can be observed close to Titian's Venere di Urbino, Carpaccio's Two Venetian Ladies, Lotto's Portrait of a Gentleman, highlighting Manet's deep connections with Venetian masters and models. The case of Olympia (1863) introduces to the transformations of the "reclining female nude" since antique and Renaissance art, moving from a mythological context to a modern, independent one. While in England, a Pre-Raphaelite painter such as Burne-Jones would have illustrated the story of Sleeping Beauty, a reclining dressed young woman, waiting for love, in France, Olympia is showed naked in a naked style. Olympia, in mid-20th century, will give her name to Olympia Press, a publishing house devoted to censured, erotic books, where Nabokov's Lolita would first appear.

Abstract
Olympia, in mid-20th century, will give her name to Olympia Press, a publishing house devoted to censured, erotic books, where Nabokov's Lolita would first appear.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
